DANNY VAIA JOINS FEEL
Young British commercials director Danny Vaia has announced his decision to join Feel films for U.K. commercials representation. Danny, who until recently, was one half of the directing duo Danny & Ezra, is best known for his Nike spots. The executions display a highly creative mix of live action and visual fx/animation often combined with humour.
Danny who studied architecture at Kingston and Westminster Universities before turning his attention to design and graphics, went on to create print campaigns for the likes of Playstation, Peugeot, Nike and Adidas to name a few.
In 2000 Danny teamed up with Ezra Holland to form half of the multi-disciplinary design and media collective General Lighting And Power where they combined their talents to make short films and 3D animation. They went on to direct pop promos for the likes of Groove Armada and Goldfrapp whilst at the same time adapting short films for use by clients such as Hoegaarden and Audi.

Following their move in 2006 to Serious Pictures, the duo directed a variety of spots for Clients such as Cobra Beer, Christian Aid, Black & Decker, Radox and J&B Whisky. In 2008 Danny & Ezra split as creative partners to pursue their individual directing careers.

Most recently, Danny has shot a series of idents for National Geographic. With this venture he became a member of a very select club - consisting of three members - of directors to have filmed commercials in zero gravity! The Reel covered the story last year – if you missed it (shame on you) its still online here.

SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING

Michael Jansen and Bas Korsten, highly awarded ex-DDB Executive Creative Directors and co-founders of Selmore, have officially started Nothing this week.

Nothing is an Amsterdam-based, independent entrepreneurial agency that delivers innovation and commercial creativity for local and international clients out of a cardboard box. Literally. The Nothing office, built entirely of cardboard, was designed by internationally recognized designers Alrik Koudenburg and Joost van Bleiswijk.

Michael Jansen had this to say:

“Nothing is about the power of ideas, about how a single idea can transform nothing into something. Using a cheap throw-away material to build a unique and memorable work space, seemed a good way to materialize this thought.”

Nothing’s goal is simple: turn consumers into brand advocates by any means to hand. This approach sees Jansen and Korsten creating meaningful brand experiences ranging from product innovation and store design, to employee training programmes and, yes, even TV campaigns.

Bas Korsten went on:

“Technological innovation is developing at an amazing pace and so is the role of social persuasion, due to the wildfire growth of online social networks and blogs. At the same time traditional mass communication is being met with increased cynicism. This means that brand advocates are quickly becoming a brand’s most valuable asset”.

Alongside Nothing is ‘Nothing Ventured’, the company’s in-house business concepts development arm. Nothing Ventured sees the likes of architects, industrial- and 3D- designers and online specialists come together to make their ideas happen. Current projects include an experiential measurement product, a web-based travel platform, an international webshop for young fashion designers and even a new sport, with all the accompanying commercial opportunities. These initiatives can be brought to market both as stand-alone ventures or to directly benefit clients.

Wow!

BTAA 2009 - WHO WON WOT?!

What do Mothers, Rattling Sticks and a massive loaf of Hovis have in common? They’re all big winners in the 2009 BTAA (British Television Advertising Awards), that’s what!!

Handed out at London’s Grosvenor House on the evening of Wednesday 11th March, the '09 BTAA saw a plethora of top notch TV spots receive graded gongs. In the top slot, Miles Calcraft Briginshaw Duffy’s Hovis ‘Go On Lad’ ad triumphed, winning The Thinkbox Award for Best Television Commercial of the Year.

Elsewhere, Mother scooped The Adstream Award for Most Successful Agency of the Year as well as picking up a further Gold Award for its PG Tips ‘Breakfast’ ad. VCCP picked up two Gold Awards for its Home Office Binge Drinking Awareness ad called ‘Binge Female’. CHI & Partners also won two Gold Awards for its Britvic Drench Water ‘Brains’ work. Both Ogilvy and AKQA won a Gold Award apiece for their Comfort ‘Naturists’, and PG Tips ‘Queen’ ads respectively.

The Directors of the BTAA voted for Reel faves Traktor to receive The Chairman’s Award for an outstanding contribution to the commercials industry. The brilliant Rattling Stick won The Panalux Award for Most Successful Production Company of the Year – nicely coinciding with their upcoming feature in the March UK Reel DVD. Finally Joe & Co were awarded The BTAA Fellowship for an outstanding contribution to the production of commercials.

The awards, chaired by Charles Crisp, Head of TV at Red Brick Road, were chosen by a jury of 20 leading industry figures including Zoe Bell, Head of TV at Mother, Daniel Kleinman founder of Rattling Stick, Fleur Castell, Digital Cinema Media, Jonathan Mildenhall, Vice-President, Global Marketing Strategy & Creative Communications, Coca-Cola and Carolyn Bradley, UK Marketing Director, Tesco.

The hugely successful evening was presided over by the BTAA chairman Martin Bowley. You can find out more info at www.btaa.co.uk, or scroll down to see the full champion list (with a few of our fave clips thrown in!).
