Jacobs and Hussey Rokkit to the top

Luke Jacobs (former Head of Production at Rokkit) and Nick Hussey (fresh from running The Ebeling Group in London) are now MD and Executive Producer of Rokkit respectively.

Jacobs said "Nick is very connected and well regarded. He's always done sales, but in an innovative way for London. He builds trust through being knowledgeable and understanding what agencies need. He hates the pushy sales thing. What you see is what you get, I really wanted that for us. And he has the experience for us to share the workload."

“We're a production company that you go to with solutions. That agencies and media folk can get advice from, and we have the directors and production skills for all solutions. It's a new world out there and whilst many are concerned, we feel optimistic and comfortable".

Hussey, getting stuck in to the big love-in, said "Rokkit have an awesome roster. The most exciting set of directors I can think of. I would say that, but that’s why I'm here.

“I'd always eyed those guys jealously. I thought there was such enormous potential there. We reckon that with Luke's production and management experience and me concentrating on the sales/marketing/relationship stuff, we compliment each other perfectly. I'd heard that Luke and the guys are good, down-to-earth people, and when you couple that with the most vibrant directors in Europe, it's the best combination I can think of in London."

Hussey will work with Director’s Rep Oli Hammerton in getting the message out.
"I've been watching Oli and it's great to be working with him. He's a self-taught, genuine and clued-up rep. He cares about the directors and the work, and isn't just party party. But he can drink two G&Ts without slipping into a coma, unlike me" said a slightly jealous Hussey.

We can’t wait for the wunder-team to get up to speed. In the meantime, check out the company's impressive roster here – www.rokkit.tv.

Getting Skimmer for summer

Are your Twitters in a clutter? Your Facebook lost its place? Your Blogger bungled up? Well fear not, ‘cause Fallon have created something to get your social networks … er … networked. Skimmer is a new lifestreaming tool that serves as a dashboard for a person’s social networks. The ap saves users the time and hassle of manually checking Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, and Blogger by consolidating the feeds into a single stream of relevant content on the desktop. And it looks well pretty. And it’s free. Result!

We love the idea of brands/agencies/companies providing clever solutions like this, so keep it up bods and boddesses. Grab your copy here - http://www.fallon.com/skimmer.

Calling all Dwarfers

Remember Red Dwarf? Funny sci-fi sitcom. Had the fella off Corrie, the bloke from Scrapheap Challenge, Gordon Brittas and the singing voice of one of the Fireys from Labyrinth. Six good series and two shonky ones. Used the word smeg a lot. Mostly liked by teenage boys, but we knew a girl who liked it too. Her name was Kelly.

Yeah you know it.

Anyway, it’s back on the UK TV station Dave this Easter and Red Bee Media have created a clever little ARG (Alternate Reality Game) for it. Acting like a story-telling treasure, users control their Cat Nav (see what they did there) to reveal the location of the crew’s long-awaited re-union whist hunting for clues and hidden links that will slowly reveal exclusive content online.

Aimed mostly at nerdstroms like us (as most ARGs are), the campaign manages to balance some of the excessively complex puzzle based elements that consign most ARGs to the deepest darkest forums with simple tasks that reveal genuinely interesting content. Whilst we’re not sure the show will actually be any good (going to Coronation Street … really!?!), the online game and footage is certainly engaging enough for a visit.

Film Friends FOREVER!!!

God we love films here at The Reel. Sure, they can’t all be Back To The Future, Big Trouble In Little China or The Expendables, but all movies, long or short, usually manage to find a cosy space in our hearts. Because of this we love film events, especially ones that say they’ll be our friends forever – so we bloody love www.filmfriendsforever.com and their marvellous attitude towards the flicks.

Here are a couple of their upcoming events, including one featuring Reel fave Eran Creevy:

Film Friends Forever / 1st April 2009
As Obama vowed to restore Science to its rightful place in his historic inauguration speech, Film Friends Forever will be exploring the role of science in short films with a selection based on science and science fiction. We will delight and surprise you with wars taking place in the future, visualisations of invisible fields, animal behaviour and more!

Preview Screening / Shifty / 17th April 2009
Shifty, the portrait of a drug dealer is based on Eran Creevy's teenage experiences, and boasting convincing performances from a cast of rising stars, the film was funded by Film London's Microwave scheme, and delivered after a shooting schedule of just 18 days.

See you there!

And finally…

If, like us, you were left green with envy at the lucky party goers who got to hang out with Run DMC, Becks and the Ting Tings (the TING TINGS!!) for adidas’ Originals campaign, be prepared to go yellow with envy at this smart Simpson’s parody. Using footage from the series’ 20+ year history, the spot is a viral favourite created by SKY to celebrate the platinum anniversary of show and station. Enjoy.

Where Were They?

This years Comic Relief spot saw no less than 13 brand mascots come together on camera and make a plea for consumer cash. But the crazy gang were not vying selfishly for their bit of the everyman’s pie – in fact the group were asking you not to buy teabags, or insurance or cereal or freeze-dried potatoes.

They were asking you to give to charity…

But who was missing from this brand mascot list of champions? Was this really the premiership of brand talismans ... or had they missed a couple?

We at the Reel thought they had missed a trick on a few…

Douglas - The Lurpak Man

Aardman’s superb trumpet playing maniac could have been the perfect play-pal for the angry mentalist meat man from Pepperami. Whilst the former is a bit of an animal, the buttery fellow’s dulcet tones could have spread a little more comedy gold on the piece.

Flat Eric

Levi’s 90’s talisman was an ideal sparring partner for the PG-tips Monkey. We were thinking a cage, an octagon and a fatman tag team partner to level Johnny Vegas… the smart money would have been on Matt Lucas being in his corner.

Homepride's Fred

Fred the flourgrader has been on the English tellybox since the dawn of time. Okay not the dawn of time, but Fred has been entertaining and flogging homepride flour since 1964. Why then did he not make it into the golden 13? Probably because he was too busy giving millions of pounds to Comic Relief or something…

Barry Scott

Missing out the undisputed king of bargain basement advertising and screaming VO’s ‘Barry Scott’ was a criminal faux-pas on the part of the Comic Relief team. We were flabbergasted that he wasn’t present, with his dirty penny ready to educate and entertain. Interestingly Scott has several foreign cousins Martin Grellis (in Australia) and Dan Dolan (in North America) who both have a penchant for Reckitt Benckiser.product “Easy-off BAM” and loud voice overs… hmmm….

Kia-Ora Crows

It’s too orangey for Comic Relief… Or rather it hasn’t been on the box for several years, which more than likely wrote these fabulous feathered junglebook-style characters out of the picture.

Mr Muscle

A wobbly re-brand from weed into weight-lifter was probably the reason that Mr (that’s actually his first name) didn’t make it into the hallowed comic relief 13. We preferred him when he was a douchebag…

The Milkybar Kid

Tough. Strong. Cant go wrong. Which bits of his resume didn’t Comic Relief look at? I mean, this kid was a NO BRAINER! Im assuming that current ASA rules have shackled the bespectacled hero to a cross or something, because really and truly, the Milkybar Kid should have been there.

P.S. We didn’t do Tony the Tiger because quite frankly, the idea of a talking tiger that eats frosted flakes is quite preposterous. HE WOULD HAVE EATEN EVERYONE IN THE ROOM!

Steven Sander’s in to Transparent

Former Quiet Storm director, Steven Sander, joins Transparent for UK representation. A Cambridge University graduate, Steven started his film career as a runner at Union Films, where he shot his first commercial, a spec film for Weetabix. which proved to be so popular with the client, it was actually broadcast, opening the door to paid for commissions from BT, Nokia, News International and BMW Mini, amongst others.

A multi faceted talent, Steven has also directed, shot and edited, a number of award winning short films and documentaries, most recently three outstanding films for Channel 4's Three minute Wonder, profiling relationships between sports coaches and their proteges, In 2008 Steve edited his first feature film "New Town Killers" while his harrowing commercial "Torture By Any Other Name" won Silver at The European Creative Advertising Awards and was featured in the APA 08 Collection of the best UK ads of the year, marking him as someone to watch.

Anonymous gets some Purchase

Production and management firm Anonymous Content has hired the dynamic, two-man filmmaking team of David and Ian Purchase to its Commercial, Integrated, and Feature Film divisions.

On joining Anonymous' roster David Purchase exclaims, "Anonymous Content is an amazing company. There was hardly a decision to be made. It was a wonderful opportunity that presented itself and we are extremely happy to be working with them."

The Toronto-born brothers have earned an industry-wide reputation for putting together entertaining independent feature films with little to no budget, showing an impressive resourcefulness that bodes well for their professional prospects. The pair has single-handedly tackled nearly every aspect of their past projects soup to nuts (ed: We had to Google to find out that this means ‘from beginning to end’ in American. It is now part of Reel lexicon).

http://www.anonymouscontent.com/

Psst!

Not To Scale’s Steve Scott has joined forces with PSST! 3, a collaborative film project consisting of 17 films made by a team of 51 designers, directors, animators and composers.

The mission of PSST! is to produce original short films through collaborations, with each film being comprised of three sections produced by three different teams: the beginning, middle and end. The concept is derived from the Dadaist game of Exquisite Corpse and the children’s game Telephone and applied to the arts of motion graphics, animation and film-making. Got it?

If you’re massively confused, just come to the London screening on Thursday, 26th March. It will be screened at the Bodhi Gallery @ 7pm, 214 Brick Lane, London, E1 6SA.

…and finally

You know we like a spot of Friday fun here at The Reel, so here’s a dose of web-based magic to give your digits a Daft Punk feel. Using the familiar Hawkings-like vocals of the duo’s Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, the web-app allows you to create a vocorchestra of uplift. Kudos Najle, kudos.

DANNY VAIA JOINS FEEL
Young British commercials director Danny Vaia has announced his decision to join Feel films for U.K. commercials representation. Danny, who until recently, was one half of the directing duo Danny & Ezra, is best known for his Nike spots. The executions display a highly creative mix of live action and visual fx/animation often combined with humour.
Danny who studied architecture at Kingston and Westminster Universities before turning his attention to design and graphics, went on to create print campaigns for the likes of Playstation, Peugeot, Nike and Adidas to name a few.
In 2000 Danny teamed up with Ezra Holland to form half of the multi-disciplinary design and media collective General Lighting And Power where they combined their talents to make short films and 3D animation. They went on to direct pop promos for the likes of Groove Armada and Goldfrapp whilst at the same time adapting short films for use by clients such as Hoegaarden and Audi.

Following their move in 2006 to Serious Pictures, the duo directed a variety of spots for Clients such as Cobra Beer, Christian Aid, Black & Decker, Radox and J&B Whisky. In 2008 Danny & Ezra split as creative partners to pursue their individual directing careers.

Most recently, Danny has shot a series of idents for National Geographic. With this venture he became a member of a very select club - consisting of three members - of directors to have filmed commercials in zero gravity! The Reel covered the story last year – if you missed it (shame on you) its still online here.

SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING

Michael Jansen and Bas Korsten, highly awarded ex-DDB Executive Creative Directors and co-founders of Selmore, have officially started Nothing this week.

Nothing is an Amsterdam-based, independent entrepreneurial agency that delivers innovation and commercial creativity for local and international clients out of a cardboard box. Literally. The Nothing office, built entirely of cardboard, was designed by internationally recognized designers Alrik Koudenburg and Joost van Bleiswijk.

Michael Jansen had this to say:

“Nothing is about the power of ideas, about how a single idea can transform nothing into something. Using a cheap throw-away material to build a unique and memorable work space, seemed a good way to materialize this thought.”

Nothing’s goal is simple: turn consumers into brand advocates by any means to hand. This approach sees Jansen and Korsten creating meaningful brand experiences ranging from product innovation and store design, to employee training programmes and, yes, even TV campaigns.

Bas Korsten went on:

“Technological innovation is developing at an amazing pace and so is the role of social persuasion, due to the wildfire growth of online social networks and blogs. At the same time traditional mass communication is being met with increased cynicism. This means that brand advocates are quickly becoming a brand’s most valuable asset”.

Alongside Nothing is ‘Nothing Ventured’, the company’s in-house business concepts development arm. Nothing Ventured sees the likes of architects, industrial- and 3D- designers and online specialists come together to make their ideas happen. Current projects include an experiential measurement product, a web-based travel platform, an international webshop for young fashion designers and even a new sport, with all the accompanying commercial opportunities. These initiatives can be brought to market both as stand-alone ventures or to directly benefit clients.

Wow!

Hungry Man in the mood for a bit of Lemon.

Hungry Man has recently aquired the skills of Argentinan native Lemon, as they join Hungey Mans healthy roster.
Surrounded by art at a young age, Lemon came to directing by way of photography.

“My mother has a degree in art and used to give courses to young people in our living room. As a kid I used to spy on them, it really left an impact on me,” he says.

It wasn’t a straight path to directing for Lemon; originally he studied law and worked in an attorney’s office for almost 5 years. Needing some more inspiration in his life, Lemon left everything behind and went to live in Barcelona where he taught himself cinematography.

“I used to sneak into the University of Catalunia’s library every single day of the week and would watch four movies a day,” he says. “I learned all the shots by heart.”

Returning to Buenos Aires in 2000, Lemon began working as an assistant director at Peluca Films and then signed on with Rebolucion in August 2005.
In 2007, he won the Grand Prix for his Impulse’s campaign (co-directed with Armando Bo) at San Sebastian, and Silver at Cannes. Lemon continued to win many other awards in 2008 including bronze at the Clio’s & at the New York Festival for his work on Sprite “Graffiti”, as well as the Impulse Campaign. Additionally, he received bronze at San Sebastion for Mox’s “Masoquistas”. In continuing his success, Lemon was listed among talents like Tom Kuntz, Frederick Bond and Noam Murro for the Gunn Report as one of the most awarded directors in the world in 2008.

“Lemon’s reel is one of the best we have seen from South America recently” says Alex Mehedeff, Hungry Man Rio Manager & Executive Producer. “His work shows how dedicated and focused he is in developing great performances and adding his visual influences within the frame.”

Sir Martin Sorrel to Lead Cannes 09 debate.

Sir Martin Sorrell, CEO of WPP Worldwide, returns to Cannes to guide a heavyweight panel of global marketing leaders in a discussion on how the recession is affecting the industry now and how it will shape its future. Joining Sir Martin on stage will be Marc Pritchard, Global Marketing Officer of P&G; Mary Beth West, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Kraft Foods Inc.; and Mary Dillon, Executive Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer of McDonald's Corporation.

The three represent an incredible 13 billion dollars of Ad spend together, making this discussion one that is not to be missed.

The Cannes Debate, which launched in 2005, is a group discussion between the most influential people in the business addressing the most topical issues that are currently affecting the advertising and communications industry.
This year's hour-long Cannes Debate will take place on Friday 26th of June at 12:00 in the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.

DeptA grab Irwin.

Since then he has received commissions from the UK Film Council & Film London, BBC New Talent and Animate Projects (Channel 4 / Arts Council England), and in 2008 was shortlisted for a British Animation Award for his music video for Lightspeed Champion.

Developing six idents and 15 on screen presentations, Red Bee Media had to cover a variety of historical periods including Ancient Rome, World War II, 1980’s, Victorian, Renaissance, Punk and Post-modern. All of the rebrand work is designed to engage viewers with the channel’s factual content, as well as the social and dramatic aspects of the past to make it more immediate and relevant to viewers.

Following the successful rebrand of UKTV’s entertainment portfolio as Dave, G.O.L.D., Watch and Alibi, Yesterday will be the third of the pay TV broadcaster's factual channels to be rebranded, following Eden and Blighty's launches on 26th January and 17th February 2009 respectively. The final wave of the network’s ambitious rebrand to create a portfolio of multiplatform brands will be completed in Q2 2009 with the re-launch of its lifestyle offerings.

Venue Change for Dubai IAF and LYNX.

The organisers of the Dubai International Advertising Festival and the Dubai Lynx Advertising Awards have announced that both events will now take place this month at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Speaking on behalf of the organisers, Festival Director Steve Lane said, "We had been looking forward to opening this year’s festival at The Palladium and certainly hope to hold it there in 2010. For this year though, and with the event taking place next week, we all felt it would be best to return to the DICEC where the festival was held last year."

The seminars, workshops, exhibitions, Young Creatives Competition and Lynx Academy will now all take place in the Sheikh Rashid Hall of the DICEC, which is located at the head of Sheikh Zayed Road, with the Awards Ceremony and Dinner happening in the Sheikh Maktoum Hall of the DICEC.

Monster - Double Take

Agency: BBDO New York

Production: Epoch / Rattling Stick

Director: Daniel Kleinman

This is a funny idea, although not necessarily brilliant and without the penetrating depth of former executions by monster.com. I’m not sure if the value proposal of the brand gets very clear. The humorous premise that at work there are winners and losers is funny but, perhaps, a bit cruel at this time of layoffs around the world. Maybe, I would expect a greater empathy, a more concrete demonstration of what the brand can do for me at this moment.

Dairy Milk - Eyebrows

Agency: Fallon London

Production: MJZ London

Director: Tom Kuntz

That Gorilla put the bar really high. This execution is impeccable and fun, but looks a little bit more effect-based and puts forth a little bit more effort than Gorilla, which was insultingly daring to discard all premises of what should be "a classic advertising idea based on a clear reason-why." However, this is an execution fully conversant with the internet world, and I like the Cadbury's consistency of continuing to interpret with sublime liberty the concept of "a glass and a half full of joy" as the possibility of giving people a moment of pleasure.

Hulu.com - Alec in Huluwood

Agency: CPB Miami

Production: Pony Show Entertainment Los Angeles

Director: Peter Berg

Fantastic. A cynical, delirious and brilliant look regarding the theories about the alienating powers of television. Baldwin is excellent and the editing is clever. It's possibly the most memorable Super Bowl ad for me. "An Evil Plot to Destroy the world" is about creating a drama around the brand. It's accepting that, hey, this is TV Land. In other words, time to have some fun.

T-Mobile - Change of Routine

Agency: Saatchi & Saatchi London

Production: Partizan London

Director: Micheal Gracey

It feels neither fresh nor highly original. It's an idea that has been done before. But the problem with this piece is, basically, credibility. I really cannot digest the "naturality" of this collective manifestation of happiness. Everything about it feels like “too much advertising”. In the area of great collective ideas, Nike, Playstation, Adidas ... continue to rule.

Kia Soul - Cabin

Agency: Publicis Toronto

Production: Untitled Films Toronto

Director: Mark Gilbert

I must confess that I went to the website http://www.peerintoasoul.ca/ to help me understand this spot. From that point of view, the goal of this effort might be accomplished. But I had to look at the other two spots from this campaign on the website to assure myself that it was the idea that I truly thought think it was. Excellent production, intriguing, but the "I stopped doing what I thought I was important to do because my attention was caught by a car" is not only an overdone concept, but also makes me question whether or not I want to exchange four beauties for a car like this one.
